The Trophy Bassmasters took a page out of the
archives and competed in a 2 day tournament over the
weekend at West Harbor on Lake Erie. Two day tournaments
used to be a regular occurrence on the schedule but time
considerations have put them on the shelf until this
past weekend. The last one was in the 90s. The 2
tournament days were radically different in production
for the 20 competitors. Saturday saw unseasonably cool
temps as the club started at 1:00PM for a 6 hour day.
Only 20 bass were caught and no one had more than 3. Jim
Miller was leading after the 1st day with
5.76lbs. Mark Dairy had 5.06lbs for 2nd and
Steve Barker stood in 3rd with 4.72lbs.
Sunday proved to be a little better day even though the
cold front that moved through on Friday night and
stymied the catch rates on Saturday was still causing
slower than normal action for this time of year on Lake
Erie. Fifteen members brought fish to the scales on
Sunday. A total of 45 keepers at 103.02lbs were brought
in, scored and released. Boyd Downey topped the leader
board for the day with 5 keepers and 15.04lbs. Downey’s
Saturday catch of 1 fish and 2.35lbs gave him a
tournament best total of 17.39lbs. Downey also had the
big bass of the event as he weighed a 4.58lb largemouth
for the honor. Second place once again went to John
Clark. This is Clark’s 4th runnerup spot this
season. Clark brought in 1 bass at 1.23lbs on Saturday
and 5 keepers at 13.59lbs on Sunday for a 14.82lb total.
Logan Barker also used a big second day to propel him
into the 3rd spot. Barker caught his total
weight of 5 fish and 12.65lbs on Sunday to earn the
position. The Angler of the Year point race had a little
shake up following this 9th event of the
season.
