The Trophy Bassmasters caught a huge break in one respect while running into an unexpected obstacle in another during the year end Classic tournament this past weekend. The club traveled north to West Harbor and Lake Erie for the year end competition. The weather was absolutely perfect as warm temperatures and light breezes made for comfortable fishing and safe boating. The problem arose in the form of big algae bloom that covered the water in a thick pea green soup as well as very turbid muddy waters produced from the high winds the past weeks. The near shore waters were almost unfishable. Only certain small areas in the bays or very far off shore had water conditions that were conducive to catching fish. A well known fact about tournament fishing on Lake Erie is that a 5 fish limit of smallmouth will win out over a limit of largemouth almost every time. The problem is finding a limit of smallmouth especially with the poor water quality has been difficult. John Clark made the long trip to Canadian waters around Pelee Island and found smallmouth. Although Clark could only boat 4 fish they were more than enough for the victory and the big bass award. Clark’s 4 smallmouth bass weighed in at 16.78lbs with his largest going 4.51lbs. Virgil Grant made a long trip west to a harbor in Toledo to net a dandy 5 fish limit of largemouth bass to claim 2nd place. His creel topped out at 14.84lbs. Placing 3rd in a very close finish was Andy Cripple.  Cripple had 5 bass at 12.61lbs but had 5 competitors within 1 1/2lbs. All 17 members brought in a t least 1 keeper over the 14” limit for a grand total of 55 bass and 132.36lbs. This concludes the fishing competition for the Trophy Bassmasters for the 2011 fishing season.
