The Trophy Bassmasters spent a confusing day on the Black River and adjoining Lake Erie this past weekend. Unlike other poor fishing days which can usually be blamed on the weather or poor water conditions, such was not the case. Beautiful skies and clear water coupled with light breezes greeted the anglers as they took to the water at 6:30AM. When the 12 anglers finished their 9 hour day at 3:30PM only 7 had keeper bass and only 1 member had a 5 fish limit. A total of 14 bass weighing in at only 25.01lbs were scored and released. Pretty sharp contrast to a week ago when 16 members caught 61 fish and nearly 124lbs! Taking the top prize for the 2nd week in a row was Andy Cripple. Cripple’s 5 largemouths weighed 8.01lbs. Cripple also had a 2nd place finish 2 weeks ago to make a big move in the Angler of the Year race. Finishing in the runner up position for the 2nd straight week was Don Ratcliff. He had 3 bass at 5.60lbs. Third place went to Dave Wedertz. Wedertz had 2 keepers and 3.08lbs. This is also the 3rd tournament in a row that Cripple and his boat partner fished in the top 3 as Wedertz and Cripple were boat partners at this tournament. Boyd Downey had 1 fish at 2.67lbs for the big bass of the day. The Angler of the Year race will shift often during the last 4 tournaments as the anglers continue to add and subtract scores by counting just their best 9 outings.
