Steve Ganger took most of the suspense out of the
2009 Angler of the Year race with his performance in the Trophy Bassmaster’s
final club tournament of the season this past weekend at the Portage River and Lake Erie.
Ganger held a comfortable margin over 4 challengers going into the
tournament but a top finish by any of the 4 and a poor performance by Ganger
could have made for a photo finish. Back to Ganger in a moment. The
tournament had the proper conditions for poor performances as a chilling
cold front pushed through on Friday evening. The drop in temperatures along
with considerable rainfall which muddied much of the backwater areas in the
bays and harbors set the stage for tough fishing. Mark Dairy solved the
mystery in an outstanding fashion as he netted a 5 fish limit that pulled
the scales to 15.23lbs which is the largest 1 day catch this year. He also
had the big bass of the day with a 3.61lb smallmouth. Second place went to
Virgil Grant. Grant had the only other limit of 5 fish. His creel weighed
11.40lbs. Dave Wedertz had 7.60lbs and 4 fish for the 3rd place
award. Only 9 of the 14 anglers weighed in a keeper during the 8 hour day
with only 24 fish and 51.60lbs scored and released alive. That brings us
back to Ganger who had 2 fish and 4.98lbs to finish 4th and nail
down the Angler of the Year title with a 17 point margin. Ganger also
finished the year with the Big Bass of the year. He brought in a 4.81lb
largemouth at the last club tournament at the Lake Erie
tournament out of the Mazurik boat ramp. The club has 1 more outing as they
will compete in a year end Classic later this month. No points are awarded
so Ganger’s tiles are secure. The 2009 Angler of the Year point totals were
very close in several spots as predicted. One fish throughout the year in
many cases made a big difference in the standings. |
