For those who follow the exploits of the weekend fishing shows, a new
program this season has been City Limits Fishing with Pro angler Mike
Iaconelli. One of the constants of his show has been his uncanny ability to
arrive at a fishing destination just as the weather turns horrible. The past
couple of seasons the same could be said of the Trophy Bassmasters during
their travels around Ohio.
Beautiful days in the middle of the week prior to a tournament would
invariably be followed by cold or wind or torrential rains. Well the Trophy
boys finally caught a break this past weekend when Sunday’s light breeze and
warm sunshine was sandwiched between Saturday’s cold winds and Monday’s snow
squalls. The club was also rewarded with above average catch rates for a
season opener. Twenty-three keepers that weighed 45.62lbs were caught,
scored, and released alive. Two of the 23 bass were over 4lbs each. Compare
this to the 2 small bass that were brought to the scales at the 2008 opener
at Alum Creek. Over half of the 20 man field weighed in at least 1 keeper of
12” or more. The top angler was Steve Barker. He netted 3 keepers for
8.52lbs. Barker’s livewell contained 1 of the 4lb plus fish. John Wadding
had 4 fish and 7.49lbs for 2nd place. Wadding reported catching
his fish on a crankbait in one of the many lily pad fields around the lake.
Dave Wedertz nailed 2 fish in the closing minutes to increase his creel to 4
bass and 5.35lbs for 3rd place. Bringing in the Big Bass of the
event was Paul Sandrus. Sandrus landed a 4.55lb largemouth for the honor.
The club’s next activity will be the Trophy Bassmaster’s 31st
Annual Indian Lake Spring Open Bass Tournament on Indian
Lake
on April 19th. This tournament is open to the public. For further
