Judd Rarey of the Trophy Bassmasters took a huge step, this past weekend, in securing the 2005 Mr. Bass point championship with his performance at the Vermilion River and adjoining Lake Erie. Rarey traveled nearly 30 miles out into the open waters of Lake Erie to Pele Island where he landed 4 nice smallmouth weighing 12.50lbs to capture 1st place. In contrast, Boyd Downey traveled about 30 yards from the mouth of the Vermilion River to hook a limit of 5 keeper largemouth that weighed 9.22lbs for 2nd place. Jim Miller rounded out the top 3 winners as he netted 2 smallmouth including a monster at 5.17lbs for big bass. This is the 3rd tournament in a row that the big bass for the year has been eclipsed. Only 16 keeper bass were scored by the 17 anglers totaling 42.69lbs. All but 1 was released alive. With the 1st place finish Rarey has a big advantage with just 2 tournaments left.
