The Trophy
Bassmasters finally got to go to fish at one of their favorite locations.
Lake Erie had a closed season for bass this spring to protect the spawn.
Once the season was opened the bass fanatics flocked to the big lake in
anticipation of getting their strings stretched by the large and plentiful
smallmouth bass that live there. The Trophy club was no different as 10
members and 1 guest tried their luck going out of the city ramp in Vermilion
Ohio. At the end of the day over 45 keepers over the 14” length limit were
caught. The 35 fish that were brought in and weighed tipped the scales at
over 91lbs for a better than 2 1/2 lb average. For the 3rd time
in the last 4 tournaments Boyd Downey and Bob Flowers finished 1st
and 2nd respectively. Downey’s 5 fish limit weighed 14.36lbs and
included the big bass at 4.31lbs. Less than 1 ˝ oz behind was Flowers’ 5
fish limit at 14.27lbs. Third place went to Vern Boecher who only had 4
keepers yet still weighed an impressive 12.75lbs. Steve Ganger brought his
brother Dane to compete with the club and Dane netted 5 fish that totaled
12.86lbs and would have placed him third.
