The Trophy
Bassmasters made a disappointing trip this past weekend to the Black River
and Lake Erie near Lorain Ohio. This is one the club’s favorite destinations
especially this time of year as the smallmouth bass are normally starting to
load up in anticipation of the upcoming winter months. It wasn’t that the
bass were not cooperating. It was more along the lines of not being able to
get to them. The smallmouth bass prefers clear water and while there is an
abundance of clear water on Lake Erie, a strong sustained wind especially
from the North can silt up the areas close to the South shore. These are the
conditions that greeted the Trophy club as they started their 8 ½ hour day.

A 30 to 40 MPH
wind had been blowing from the Northeast for 3 days and completely muddied
up the fishable water. The wind also kept the anglers from venturing out to
look for clearer conditions as large waves pummeled the area all during the
fishing day. The catch rate was a direct reflection of the conditions as
only 5 fish of at least 14” were brought to the scales. Steve Ganger was the
top angler with 2 bass weighing a total of 4.41lbs. He also had the big bass
of the event as 1 of his fish was a 2.72lb smallmouth. Vern Boecher had 2
keepers for 2nd place. His catch weighed 4.41lbs. Finishing in
the 3rd position with 1 fish and 1.77lbs was Boyd Downey.
